Tips on transforming a blank space for a wedding or event

How to transform a huge blank space into something that’s fit for a wedding or a “WOW” event? It’s something that I come across so many times and fills people with dread as to where to start.

Firstly, don’t panic! Below are some of my tips for dealing with that blank canvas.

1. Break up the space– try and visualise different pockets of activity throughout the space. For example; there could be a chill out lounge in one space (try my hay bale lounge look), a catering area, a dance floor & space for the band. Before you know it, the space will no longer feel that daunting. Use foliage and trees to provide a natural divide between these spaces.

Summer rustic barn wedding

So now we’re right in the middle of a cold and wet December and I’m going to take you back to a gorgeously warm day back in July for the lovely Jen and Derek’s rustic barn wedding. When I found out they were having their wedding reception for 250 in the HUGE barn at  Court Farm in Banwell I must admit I thought they might have bitten off more than they can chew.

The barn is….well an old cattle barn. Actually, not even old with oak wooden beams and creaky wooden door that we’re usually accustomed to. Just 80 ft by 60 ft of concrete and corrugated roofing. How on earth can this be transformed into a beautiful space for a wedding?!

Rustic & Country Spring wedding

Finally, I’m excited to share the latest photos from a rustic Spring wedding I styled and provided props for back in April. Simple, understated but so divine!

As the bride’s nickname was “bee” by her hubby to be, we thought we’d thread this look into all elements across the wedding; honeycomb shelving on top of the homemade palletwood bar, a gorgeous homemade cake with honeycomb patterns topped with its own felt bee and hand stamped bee invites on luggage tags.

Spring Eco Wedding Inspiration

So, it’s been a tough few weeks with my pops sadly passing away. I take huge comfort though in the fact that Spring is here, some warmth, sunshine and on the farm means you see new life appear up close and that just makes me happy again. Being in the wedding business, like my late father was, means you’re surrounded by joy and positivity. It keeps you going and focuses you on savouring the great things life has to offer; sharing good feelings, love and health. So this leads me onto an exciting eco wedding I am working on this Spring.

The couple are super eco-conscious and wanted me to design a wedding that incorporates their personal tastes with a down to earth, outdoor and rustic vibe (they are to be married outdoors in a humanist ceremony) with a splash of evening glamour. Easy! Well I love a challenge…

Spring Eco Wedding

As a wedding stylist I like to learn about the couple and find out their story. How they met, what makes them tick, the proposal. Anything that helps me build a picture about them and makes their story unique. Because every story is unique!  I suggest they put together a pinterest board- but not to go too crazy – just a max of 20 images is perfect to give me an idea of what you love. In this case, the groom had a nickname for his bride; a bumblebee in Welsh. So cute. So we went along with a honeycomb stamp on recycled luggage tags for the wedding invites. The luggage tags didn’t need envelopes as the address could be written on the underside so savings to be made in terms of paper use. I’m not keen on themes for weddings per se but I do like to tie in elements to a wedding so we will be featuring our new honeycomb shelves that will serve as a backdrop for the bar and a honeycomb shaped table plan sat on one of Blue Wren’s rustic easels.

The couple have chosen a beautiful marquee that was handmade in the nearby Forest of Dean by local craftsmen. This also reduced the carbon footprint of having to have a huge structure delivered across the country.

Bridesmaids are younger nieces and to be in white boho style lace gowns and brown boots. CUTE! As a wedding stylist, I also advise and mock up the table setting. The bride was keen on a natural look so we’re using our upcycled pallet trestle tables (for hire now, to be featured on the website shortly!) which have a gorgeous natural grain. Terraccotta pots with white candles in abundance and splashes of yellow spring colour provided by craspedia stems in Blue Wren’s medicine bottles for hire. I love natural foliage garlands or runners along the table so these would be entwined with the terracotta pots to create a beautiful natural look for the table. Place names will be stamped onto rustic brown paper and slotted into the serviettes tied gently with some rustic string.

I’m looking forward to sharing the results of this wedding in a few weeks time. Praying it’ll be a gorgeous day for the couple as we’re also setting up a few of our wedding hay bale lounges around the garden and possibly inside the marquee.

I do hope the sun shines down on them. xxx

Irish rustic and natural wedding inspiration

So, one of my favourite things about this job is creating inspiration boards for my bride and grooms! As a wedding stylist, I don’t tend to use the word “theme” but more “elements”; these are personal stories, memories, backgrounds and the wedding venue that can be entwined throughout the wedding design. In this instance the groom hails from Ireland and so instead of over-theming the day (which can be so easily done if anyone types in Irish Wedding into google!), the idea is that you can subtly introduce elements into the day. For example, layered tweeds creates fantastic texture.

Pallet wood furniture for hire

OK ok so you you usually see it stacked up on some industrial estate rotting in a pile amongst some old disused tyres and a load of old scrap metal but I can really see some beauty in these pallets. Yes really! I honestly get such a thrill of making something that people write off as ugly and useless into a bit of a wow.

So this leads me to talk about our pallet wood seating for hire. Living on a farm, we’re not short of space so we have a huge amount of these bad boy seating areas for hire. I think they’re absolutely perfect for all types of events; dressed up smartly for weddings, draped with sheepskins for a festival or barn wedding.

Autumnal Vintage Woodland Wedding

Our Vintage Wedding styled shoot will feature on Rock My Wedding!

Wow, never in my wildest dreams would the vintage wedding styled shoot I organised make it to featuring in Rock My Wedding but I’ve just found out it has and will be published today. Yeeeeeess. Rock my Wedding only has nearly <control the breathing..> HALF A MILLION likes on Facebook!

The shoot all came about from a chance meeting with the lovely ladies at Heartfelt Vintage over a few glasses of wine (nothing new there in my books). I had a vintage prop hire and styling business and was wanting to put together a styled shoot featuring some of my gorgeous prop pieces and vintage furniture for hire. They have a team of ladies making brides look beautiful; from providing vintage bridal gowns to make up, hair and floristry. What a brilliant match!

Chosen Wedding Collective – The Hub

So I’m excited about an event I’m attending in a few days called The Hub, organised by the lovely lady Kiki who also organises the Chosen Wedding Fair; these super stylish, fun and alternative wedding fairs that everyone in the industry raves about.

The Hub is described as a “one day escape into an inspirational and supportive space” Blimey, can I book in for a week?! The reason I’m excited is that I get to hear from a whole host of the top talents in the wedding industry and dare I hope to meet some of them too.

It’s tough when you’re setting up a

Rustic Prop Hire – The Collection Photoshoot

So Im still recovering from Monday’s epically long day styling and shooting our beautiful  collection of prop hire and furniture pieces for the soon-to-be-launched website.

Beautiful day for it, well it stayed dry which when you’re working on a farm is important. Mud plus white is a bad combination especially when you’re dealing with beautiful old vintage fabrics.

We’d spent the best part of 3 days painting the old pig barn on the farm, transforming it into a beautiful white rustic studio. Even managed to rope in my niece for some extra help, poor love!
